Christmas on a Budget: Rustic & Minimal Decor Ideas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us and there are lots to be saving up for this year. However, us college students are on a budget when it comes to gift giving and decorating. Rustic style is trending this holiday season and there are so many adorable decorations that can spruce up your space this year without hurting the bank. If you’re on a budget or just like minimal and simple decorations for the holidays, then this is for you!

Bottle Brush Trees

This is a HUGE must have for Christmas this year. So many bloggers and Instagram influencers have been decorating their space with these adorable little trees and honestly, I would keep them up all year round! They come in so many different colors, but you can’t go wrong with green if you want to keep it traditional this holiday season. You can get bottle brush trees at Kohl’s, Target, and Amazon, but if you have a knack for crafts, then you can even DIY them!

Pinecone Garland

This is a great, essential piece to add to your space for the holidays! Pinecones are good for rustic decor because of how it correlates to the outdoorsy and rural aesthetic. This is pretty easy to make as all you’ll need is bind wire or florist wire, scissors, sturdy twine, and of course, pinecones. Place your garland on a fireplace mantel, around your door frame, or you can even hang them up on your wall. They’re so easy to decorate with and so versatile for so many occasions, not just the holidays!

White & Wood

When it comes to minimal rustic decor, white and wood are your best friends. The natural element of the wood makes it so versatile to use and really accomplishes the rural and rustic aesthetic. Decorate with wooden slabs for centerpieces, wooden crates for storage, or wooden Christmas figurines. Incorporating white with wood pieces cozies up your space while making it more bright, light, and airy. White Christmas stockings and throw blankets are great pieces to add to your living room for the holidays, too. The great thing about minimal decorating is that you can still use your everyday household furniture all year round and just add a couple of holiday decorations into the mix. Sometimes the holiday decorations don’t have to be taken down depending on what you’re decorating with, for example, the wooden crates and slabs or pinecone garland as mentioned before!

Wreaths

What’s Christmas without wreaths? If you want to add some color to your decor, but still want to keep things minimal and rustic, greenery is the way to go. Pine is awesome to add with wood and white because it ties into the essence of nature. Wreaths are another go-to decor piece when it comes to the exterior of your home. Add a simple green wreath to your front door accompanied by a red bow. If you really want to go natural swap the red bow for a burlap bow and fill in some twigs. How cute!

Rustic Christmas Tree

Wooden ornaments are another big trend this year for minimalists. If that’s not your style, try going for wicker ornaments for more texture. Stick to a neutral color palette like browns, tans, whites, and silver. Burlap is another great material to use for a rustic look. Use a burlap bow to top your tree or use it as ribbon. The pinecone garland that I mentioned earlier can make its appearance in your tree, too! There are so many unique and adorable pieces out there that can really make your space minimal yet cozy and festive. Pier 1 Imports has some stunning rustic tree ornaments so I recommend checking them out! You can also try DIYing your own ornaments, too. The dollar store sells clear plastic ornaments that you can then fill with whatever your heart desires.
