Q: Every time I go to a party, I see girls wearing clothes that do not flatter their bodies. How can I feel confident when I go out, yet not look trashy or slutty?

A: I think this is the biggest problem a ton of girls in college don’t realize. Of course, we’re young and we want to have fun, and we want to look good during the process – not embarrassing. I’ve seen plenty of girls at parties wearing the most unflattering crop tops or bustier tops with those tight black skirts that you can get for $5 at H&M (don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about!) and think they’re the greatest thing that’s walked into the room. The only flattering thing on them is their confidence, because that can make any girl look amazing. However, don’t you want to be aware of what you look like – not oblivious? With that said, here are my five most important tips to help you when getting ready for a night out!

1. Know your body. What I mean is to know what parts of your body are flattering and what parts aren’t. Do you have great legs? Flaunt them! Great arms? Flaunt them! If something makes you self conscious, however, don’t try to mask that over by wearing something too tight or too revealing. If you feel insecure about a specific area of your body, cover it up so you feel comfortable and more relaxed. Look confident by not worrying about your outfit or how you look in something.

2. Don’t overdress. Don’t get me wrong, you can still dress up and look cute, but don’t go overboard by overdressing because that might intimidate guys. Know the party you’re going to and what kind of crowd is going to be there so you know how to dress. You’re not going to a formal event, you’re most likely going to a frat house that’s messy, hot, and crowded.

3. Stand out in the crowd. If every girl is wearing a bustier top, don’t try to blend in by wearing one as well! There are tons of ways to look confident, and showing your midriff doesn’t have to be one of them. It’s so important to not reveal everything. If you’re wearing a short dress, cover up your upper body in a cute motorcycle jacket and if you’re wearing a revealing top, cover up your lower body with your favorite skinny jeans or leather leggings.

4. Invest in undergarments. An outfit could transform with great undergarments, so invest in a great push up bra, Spanx, or seamless panties. Undergarments will make your silhouette smooth and tight. No one will know what you’re wearing underneath that tight dress, and your body is going to look amazing!

5. Take care of yourself. Make sure you’re well groomed, have a natural makeup look, and you smell good. Being well groomed, in my opinion, is one of the most important things you can do. Parties can get crowded, which means a ton of people will invade your personal space and get a better look at you. Of course, every girl looks amazing with a full face of makeup, but what’s going to catch a guy’s attention more is how amazing a girl can look without it. So, when doing your makeup, go for a soft, neutral look so it looks like you’re not wearing anything. Don’t forget to put on unscented deodorant so people don’t smell baby powder and sweat – gross! Lastly, spray a fruity, light perfume all over.
