Five Movies to Watch on St. Patrick’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Monmouth chapter.

One year later, and there are still plenty of restrictions in our world. Rather than heading out to a bar this St. Patrick’s Day, please stay inside. Instead, relax on the couch with a few good movies – to be more festive, consider watching something Irish. Whether they are set in Ireland, employ Irish themes, or come from an Irish cast and crew, it’ll still get you in the spirit.

Check out these five for inspiration:

1. The Luck of the Irish (2001)

If you like Disney Channel Original Movies as much as I do, then you’ve definitely seen this one a ton of times. I mean, who hasn’t witnessed basketball player Kyle Johnson devote his entire soul to a gold coin?

2. Leap Year (2010)

The film takes place in Ireland and has been a constant between my friends and me. If you want to experience a rom-com on St. Patrick’s Day, I recommend watching this!

3. Wild Mountain Thyme (2020)

Two words: Emily Blunt. No, but in all seriousness, the drama follows an Irish family during a time when the head of the family intends to hand over land to an American relative over his own son. With the addition of Irish actors Jamie Dornan, Dearbhla Molloy, and Danielle Ryan, more Irish authenticity is added to the story.

4. Herself (2020)

I came across this Irish drama at my internship. As a whole, the story has stuck with me because of the powerful messages and themes involved. The film takes place in Dublin, Ireland, and was filmed on location. Also, the star and co-writer of the film, Clare Dunne, is an Irish actress. These two aspects make the film more natural and real, so I hope you can check it out soon!

5. Just My Luck (2006)

I figured the mention of Luck in the title is relevant to St. Patrick’s Day. Plus, the rom-com is led by Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine, so I think it’s pretty iconic.

These are just a few, but I know there are many other films out there that represent Ireland and Irish culture. I just wanted to create a small list, that way you have a chance to watch all of these in one day! I hope you enjoy, and Happy St. Patrick’s Day my fellow Irish folks!
