Getting Involved: to Be or Not to Be

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Molloy chapter.

Getting involved: For many, the all-too nervous commitment to something uncomfortable and frightening- the awkward and terrifying experience of getting to know new people. A nerve-rattling decision: to thrust forward into something fresh and new or to play it safe and keep out of the limelight?

Well, at least at first.

The truth is, the decision to get involved is only difficult beforehand. Then, it becomes a liberating experience, one that offers a sense of belonging and a motivation to succeed. After diving head-first into something you are passionate about, all of your doubts will vanish, stresses will seem to melt away, and you will feel better about yourself and your work, and ultimately enjoy coming to campus because of all of the amazing possibilities that are present.

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE Studies) found that there is a direct relation to student involvement and success in college. Moreover, a student is more likely to have a better experience at their college if they become involved, so it becomes a win-win situation. Involvement will not only help your grades, but it will help your happiness, and will help you love Molloy.

Lindsay Jones, a Molloy College Transfer, admitted that she felt “lost in the beginning of [her] first semester.” Moving to a new environment was something Jones described as “difficult” to cope with, but after she “started getting involved,” Jones realized “all Molloy had to offer.”

And this is an opportunity that is available for all students. There are a wide spectrum of clubs, teams, and organizations at Molloy, and there is something for everyone to enjoy. And if campus events are more of your style, there is surely something you will discover on the bulletins scattered throughout the campus. There are always interesting and unique events happening all throughout Molloy, all you have to do is go out and get involved.

The easy route is often not the most rewarding. Molloy can just be a pit stop in your day, or just another chore for the entirety of your college career; or it can be a place where you get into something new, something that will create timeless memories with people that may become lifelong friends. All you have to do is take that first step forward, however difficult that may be, and then the rest will be history.
