Alicia Keys’ “No Make Up” Movement

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Molloy chapter.

At the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, Alicia Keys showed up bare face and glowing. Alicia began a new movement hoping to send a message. The message was directed to women of all ages but mostly directed towards young girls. People in this world judge others constantly and criticize people for being themselves. Young girls growing up face situations where they start to feel uncomfortable with who they are. Situations like picture day at school, where you try to slick back your big curly hair. Times, when you noticed all the girls in Junior High, started to master makeup skills as if they model for Maybelline, and you’re sitting there in your soccer shorts and tie-dye headband. These moments start to make girls feel as if they are not good enough, not pretty enough, and need to change who they are.

Alicia has just hit us with her first full-length album in four years. The album named Here shows that this girl on fire is coming back into the bizz to show off a new style she has created. Alicia’s beautiful voice through the album shows true emotion and shows off her raw singing talent. She has a song named Girl Can’t Be Herself, which is about how females feel the need to put on makeup, wear heels, and being a certain size, just to prove that they are beautiful. Alicia is singing on how terribly sad it is to find out when a girl feels that she has to change and not be who she truly is in order to feel beautiful.

Alicia’s main goal is to teach people to not cover up what they really are inside. Everyone is beautiful inside and out. If you cover up who you really are, you aren’t living. Girls and boys need to be taught to embrace who they are. Doesn’t matter what your skin tone is, the type of hair you have, the body type you are, embrace it! You are beautiful! Many people have joined this beautiful movement, whether you put on no makeup, a little, or a full face of makeup, just be yourself.

Don’t cover up what you are, show the world how beautiful you are. Just be yourself.
