YOU Deserve Respect: Darlene Loiselle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

Name: Darlene Loiselle

Position: Instructor of Self Defense for Women

Darlene, or “Dar” as her students call her, is one of the most inspirational women I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. From her passion for teaching, to the struggles she’s faced in her personal life, this woman never ceases to amaze people. If you don’t walk out of her class on the last day of the semester with more self-respect than you had before, you probably never actually showed up.

HC: How long have you been the instructor of Self Defense for Women, and what motivated you to teach the class?

Dar Loiselle: “This fall I am starting my eighth year. I certainly saw the need and importance of the class at MNSU. A good friend, Christy Herrick, taught the class previously and groomed me to take her place. When MNSU called and invited me to teach, I felt honored to take the position.  I realize that this class can change students’ lives, and I work hard to make sure I’m relevant. I believe it’s one of the most needed classes available to students. It’s a blessing to teach.”

HC: When college women leave your class at the end of the semester, what are the most important things you want them to take with?

DL: “Respect for themselves. I want them to know they are beautiful and unique. It’s important for them to realize they are more than capable of defending themselves in adverse situations. My goal is for them to see other women as their sisters – someone who also deserves respect – and to stand up for one another. I seek to build my students’ self-respect and confidence.”

HC: Have you ever had to use your skills in a real-life situation?

DL: “Yes. I have (been) dealt abuse and disrespect. It has also helped defuse situations.”

HC: What is your favorite move, and what is the purpose of it?

DL: “The ‘Backhand Slap’ to deter unwanted advances; it can be used as a slap as well as a more serious hit to your offender’s temple. I also like the ‘U’ of your hand to the throat; it drops your offender to allow escape.”

HC: Your class mantra was “You Deserve Respect.” What are a couple things women can do to assure they are being respected?

DL: “Listen to your intuition. It will tell you if you are being treated respectfully. Listen carefully to how others talk about women. Stand up for one another. No one gets to talk down to you, call you names or treat you poorly.”

HC: As many college women have the opportunity to study abroad, what are the five most important safety tips you would tell them before they embark on their journey?

DL: “1. Have copies made of important documents, such as passport, Visa, birth certificate and driver’s license. Leave digital copies on your phone and with loved ones. 2. Know the customs of the country where you are traveling. 3. Show respect to the locals, even attempt to speak their language. 4. Know directions and maps before embarking; do your homework. 5. Have a fake wallet with cash in it. Bring at least two credit cards. Not all ATM’S work with some of the largest credit card companies.”
