Why You Should Watch “Sex Education” on Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

Maybe you haven’t heard of it, maybe you have but haven’t watched it. Or maybe you’ve watched it, and if you have, I know you loved it. The show “Sex Education” on Netflix is sure to hold your attention for hours. The first season was released on January 11, 2019 and stars Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Emma Mackey, Aimee Lou Wood, Ncuti Gatwa and many more and this combination makes for an entertaining show. The show follows Otis (Asa Butterfield) as he tries to navigate being a teenager and his own sexual adversities. He has a sex therapist as a mother and his dad, who went to America, is pretty much out of the picture besides a few video calls. After Otis helps Adam, the school bully and son of the headmaster, with the problem of a painful erection following the consumption of three Viagara’s by talking him down and giving him advice, Maeve, the perceived bad-girl of the school, tells Otis they are going to start a sex clinic where they give fellow students advice on how to enhance their sex lives. Otis uses everything he has learned from his mother to advise his classmates. This show has it all: numerous love triangles, gay best friends, witty humor and real-life problems.

Love Triangles:

One of the love triangles the show follows is between Otis, Maeve and Ola. Otis and Maeve develop feelings for each other through working the clinic together, but neither have the balls to tell each other. Ola comes into the picture after her dad does plumbing work on Otis’s house and her and Otis hit it off. The story follows the issues surrounding the complicated relationships of these three. Another love triangle featured is between Maeve, Otis and Jackson. Jackson is the headboy and a swimmer who has been hooking up with Maeve. He ends up catching feels and wanting a real relationship with her while she secretly has feelings for Otis. Jackson asks Otis for advice on how to win Maeve over which results in a series of problems.

Gay Best Friend:

My favorite character of the show is Eric, Otis’s best friend. He offers an insight into the life of an openly gay teenager who is just trying to be himself. He likes experimenting with makeup and feminine clothes while struggling to gain acceptance from his family. He has a fun sense of humor and adds a great dynamic to the show while showing us the interior feelings he has when we get shots of him alone.

Witty Humor:

With this show being set in Britain and starring British actors, it makes is far funnier to me. I think that if it was set in America I wouldn’t enjoy it as much. It is entertaining to hear the different language they use compared to Americans and their slang words for things. Also, seeing Otis and his awkward self try to get through life is extremely relatable.

Real-Life Problems

The show revolves around things that happen everyday in a typical high school. It shows Maeve’s struggle with people calling her “cock-biter” which was given to her after a guy couldn’t take rejection, so he made up a fake rumor about her and it stuck. It shows Eric’s struggle in school and at home with being openly gay. It deals with the awkwardness of first sexual encounters and actually offers up some really great advice like ‘you can’t expect someone to love you if you don’t love yourself.’

This show has a lot to offer, from the humor and relatable situations, to the advice it gives. If you are looking for a new show to watch that doesn’t have a million seasons that take forever to get into, is pretty inappropriate and will make you want to watch more, “Sex Education” is the one for you. It has also been approved for a season two so it has something to look forward to!
