Trans Femicides in 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

Since the first of the year, there have already been seven transgender women murdered in the United States. Violence against trans women is not a new occurrence.

2015 was considered the deadliest year on record for trans people, with 21 killings. It was then surpassed in 2016 when 27 were reported murdered.

The vast majority of victims were women of color.

Trans Women Killed in 2017:

  1. Mesha Caldwell, 41, Canton, Mississippi.

  2. Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow, 28,  Sioux Falls, South Dakota

  3. Jojo Striker, 23, Toledo, Ohio

  4. Jaquarrius Holland, 18, Monroe, Louisiana

  5. Keke Collier, 24, Chicago, Illinois

  6. Ciara McElveen, 21, New Orleans, Louisiana

  7. Chyna Doll Dupree, 31, New Orleans, Louisiana

Violence Against Trans People

Transgender women are statistically more likely to experience gender-based acts of violence than trans men or cis men. That number only goes up for trans women of color. A 2013 report by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs showed that 72% of anti-LGBTQ homicides were trans women and 67% were trans women of color.
