Ranked: Best and Worst Seasons of American Horror Story

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

If you are an avid American Horror Story watcher like I am, you know the difference between a good season and a rough one. If you have never seen the show but plan on watching, a forewarning: this article contains spoilers. Since airing in 2011, American Horror Story has kept us entertained for years. It brings alive the fears we have deep down inside and exploits them, although some seasons do it better than others. Here is a list of the best to worst seasons that always leave you wanting more.

  1. Roanoke (Season 6)

I think this season is incredibly underrated. The way the season was filmed really made it feel like you were watching a television show called “My Roanoke Nightmare”. and feel involved with the characters seeing the “real life” characters talk about their experiences. It was also the scariest season; there was always something lurking and making you tense. Plus, it featured a brief return of the wonderful Taissa Farmiga, who hadn’t been featured seen since season three.

2. Coven (Season 3)

This season was epic in my opinion. It was girl-power galore. If you didn’t want to be a witch after watching it then you’re doing something wrong. This was one of the seasons that I wanted to keep watching episode after episode. Whether it was discovering the powers of the witches or finding out who was going to be the next Supreme, this season kept me on my toes. We were also introduced to Emma Roberts, who is a queen when it comes to playing a bitch. (Not to mention a guest visit from the one and only Stevie Nicks.)

3.      Murder House (Season 1)

This first season of AHS had me hooked from the get go. Not only did we get to meet the incredible Evan Peters (who is in all the seasons, HALLELUJAH) but it was an introduction to many key characters and roles for the whole series. The idea behind murder house was ghosts, which sounds cheesy, but was done very well. Essentially, the ghosts are normal people who choose when they can be seen and can never leave the house. This season was a good start to a great series.

4.      Freak Show (Season 4)

I think this season spoke for itself. The story line was entertaining, but got a little blurry in the middle. Don’t get me wrong I love Jessica Lange, but I was not a fan of her character in this season. She was selfish, fame hungry and sang too much. It did, however, tie into the drama of the season, it was supposed to be that way. This season is important though because it was the first season where we really saw a crossover between the seasons by learning what happened to Pepper after leaving the Freak Show.

5.      Cult (Season 7)

The newest season to be added to Netflix, yes, I binged it in less than three days. This season was easy for me to get through, it was entertaining and relevant. The creator Ryan Murphy knew how to play off people’s real fears and it showed in this season: clowns, political leaders, unsafe communities, losing family members. This season also showed the diversity of actors, with Sarah Paulson playing an anxious mom and wife and Evan Peters playing a power-hungry cult leader (yet still making you fall in love with him somehow?). It was a hard one to rank because while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I could see how others might not agree.

6.      Asylum (Season 2)

This season was tricky to rank. It really took me a long time to get through it because there were parts that were so slow and hard to understand that I just wanted to stop watching. There were a lot of character back stories and numerous side stories that made the main storyline hard to follow. Evan Peters hands-down looked the best in this season, he definitely rocked the 50’s greaser look (okay I might be a little obsessed with him, sorry!). I think it was a good concept, just not well executed.

7.      Hotel (Season 5)

Talk about hard to get through. This season made me want to rip my eyeballs out (in the nicest way possible). It was so hard to follow, there were a lot of characters coming and going. It was quite boring at times and felt like it was just the same things repeatedly. While I do love Lady Gaga, I did not love her performance in this season. This season is an important piece in the series so unfortunately you cannot just skip over it.

American Horror Story is a show that will have you hooked for the long haul. The development of the actors can be seen from season to season and it is always fun to see who they will play next. The newest season, Apocalypse, started in early September and I am already 100% sold on it and can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
