It’s easy to be grateful when everything’s going good in life and everything is on your side. However, the hard part is finding gratitude when your whole world seems to be crashing down. During the season of “thanks” many are focusing on their blessings, but it can be hard to focus on everything you are thankful for when you’re going through stress or a crisis. Whether it’s with your family or an individual struggle, it can make the holidays a little less exciting than they should be. It’s in these hard moments that feeling grateful is the most important. Here are 3 great ways to find gratitude in hard times:

1. Make a gratitude list/journal.

Yes, this may sound lame, but trust me, it helps! Whether it’s on your computer/phone, a random piece of paper, or in your planner, making a gratitude list every day will reinforce positive thoughts. By writing down what you’re thankful for, you’re taking time out of your hectic life to recall all the good moments, things you enjoy or people who you value the most. The more you write, the more you will realize how much greatness you have in your life. During your worst days you can refer back to your gratitude journal and it might change your outlook on everything.  You may ask yourself these questions while making a gratitude list/journal:

  • Who or what inspired me today?
  • What brought me happiness today?
  • What brought me comfort and peace today?

2. Give back

Opening your eyes to those who are less fortunate by giving back can really change your attitude on life. Whether this is volunteering, or giving to your favorite charity, giving back can bring gratitude into your life. Humans are hardwired to give to others. The more we give, the happier we feel. Volunteering also allows you to appreciate everything you have in life while helping those in need. You may even see your own life in a different light after.

3. Take a gratitude walk.

Taking a gratitude walk is great because you can walk into a state of well-being and away from all your worries. During a stressful time this can be a great mood booster because not only does walking increase endorphins, it empowers you to open your mind too. The walk doesn’t have to be long, it can be as short as 10 minutes, but set aside the time to walk around your workplace, school, or outside. While walking you can reflect on things you are grateful for, and let out anything negative that you’re holding onto.

All three of these ideas can direct you into a life of gratitude, even in the toughest of time. In life gratefulness brings happiness, which is why it is so important to practice gratitude daily.

I'm Jennifer Bingen, I'm currently a Junior at Minnesota State University, Mankato, majoring in Business Management. My hometown is Maple Grove, MN. I joined Her Campus, because I wanted to get to know a great group of girls who are all for women empowerment. I strongly believe that women are capable of anything, and want to back that up with Her Campus. I want to incorporate Business into women empowerment, and show women that being in Business isn't just for men- there are plenty of CEO's who are women these days, which is awesome!  I am an english/writing tutor and I love it with a passion. I absolutely love running, yoga, my mom, dogs, coffee and holidays.
