Do you know your Self-Worth?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

Self-worth is not a term you hear too often, but it is very important that everyone can understand their own. Have you ever had an object that meant a lot to you? A piece of clothing, jewelry or even a teddy bear that eventually was ruined or damaged by something or someone else? If you have then you know what it’s like to have had something so simple mean so much to you then taken away. Of course, we’ve never thought about how it will end between our self and the teddy bear one day, but it wasn’t to be thrown away or destroyed.

This is a good way to think about your self-worth. You spent your hard-earned money on a new outfit and when your friend borrowed it, they stained it terribly. You didn’t deserve that, even if your friend didn’t mean it. Let’s say you bought a brand-new car that you absolutely loved and everyone knows it. Now, what if someone spills all over your back seat or gets honey all over your cup holders. Gross and disrespectful. You deserve to have your vehicle respected, just like the rest of your life.

Of course, that’s a simple way to look at it, but dig deep and think about your achievements, your hard work and what you’ve earned. You are worth all of those things. Working hard doesn’t just come from everyone. Stepping up to achieve your goals isn’t expected from everyone and what you earn is what YOU earn. These things make us who we are and somewhat shape us, so why would we throw it away for some guy, some “friend’ or because someone said so? Understanding your self-worth will help you understand who you are as a person and build your confidence. These are important things to think about because they will make you happy. Surround yourself with people that respect you and what you’ve done. Surround yourself with happiness because what else is life about?
