Senza Gluten is a small, cozy Italian restaurant located at 206 Sullivan St, New York, NY 10012, in the West Village, and their entire menu is 100% gluten free. I wanted to find a gluten free restaurant to review, and I got lucky finding one close to where I live! I went to dinner with my mom, who doesn’t have a gluten allergy, to get her opinion on the food.

When we arrived, the first thing I noticed was the neat row of potted plants outside the entrance. It was so cute, and made the whole place look really nice and homey. When we went in, we were seated quickly.  The atmosphere inside was rather dark, and there was a strange smell. I was a little apprehensive, but the friendliness of the wait staff made me feel more confident in the restaurant. While taking our order, our waitress asked us if we had any other allergies other than gluten. I really appreciated this, because being gluten free has become more of a trend as opposed to a legitimate dietary restriction. It’s common to get nasty looks when you ask for the gluten free option at a normal restaurant, because most wait staff will assume that you are just being trendy. I decided to order the fettuccini Bolognese, and my mom ordered the mushroom risotto.

Our entrees arrived in under twenty minutes! We barely had to wait at all, and the meals were piping hot and delicious. My pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce was great, and my mom’s risotto was creamy and the mushrooms were also cooked perfectly. We split the tiramisu for dessert, and it was delicious. It was creamy and the espresso was strong and complimented everything well.

Overall, this restaurant is definitely a go-to for people with a gluten allergy, but its rather pricey just for dinner. We didn’t order alcohol or appetizers… and our total was still more than a regular, non-specialty restaurant. It’s a good dinner spot for an unfrequent splurge, but this restaurant is definitely not in the budget of a college student.
