A Letter to My Future Daughter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MMM chapter.

My mom is one of the most important people in my life. She has taught me everything I know and has shaped me into the person I am today. As we celebrate another Mother’s Day this weekend, I wanted to take the time to reflect on the impact my mom has had on me and how I hope to share her love and wisdom. If I’m lucky enough to have a daughter of my own one day, this is what I’d want her to know, based on the advice and influence of my mom in my life.

So I guess what I would want to tell my future daughter is that everything is malleable – your life, your dreams, your body, everything.

I would be honest and tell her that sometimes, life will just knock you down. In this moment it might be hard to think that this one thing, whatever it may be, isn’t your whole world that it’ll never get better and that you will be stuck, but I would want her to know that it will, and you will, and everything will be ok with time. It’s important to remember that life in all of its different capacities is in constant flux and that things are supposed to change. Life is a growing process and life is always changing.

We grow up thinking about the possibilities of the future, dreaming and deciding what it is we will be when we “grow up.” You’ll pick a million different things and then you’ll pick a few more, question if your dream is worth it, if it’s possible, if it’s what you really want, if it’s what other people want for you, and then completely change your mind again! It’s ok. Your dreams and ambitions grow with you and evolve into new passions and new interests, they are supposed to and in the process you will find what you are looking for.

Living things aren’t meant to stay the same forever and nothing is completely permanent either when it comes to who you are and the choices you make. Your body may change and your passions may change, but as long as you are kind and true to yourself and to those around you, you will be in for a beautiful journey with all of its ups and downs that will help you realize who you are and all that you can become.
