It has never been done before in the history of the NBA. The Golden State Warriors and defending 2015 champions are 16-0 and cemented their spot as one of the best teams in NBA history, as they have created a new record for the most consecutive wins to start a season.

On Sunday, November 22, the Warriors tied previous records of 15-0 set by the Washington Capitols (1948-49) and the Houston Rockets (1993-94) with a 118-105 win over the Denver Nuggets. The Warriors blowout win on November 24 over the Lakers is the game that etched their name basketball history.

The Warriors blew the Lakers out of the water, with a 111-77 win, to which Kobe Bryant commented to ESPN, “I could have scored 80 tonight, it wouldn’t have made a damn difference.” The Warriors continued their dominance on the court with superstar Stephen Curry scoring 24 points and power forward Draymond Green scoring 18 points. Although at the final buzzer confetti fell and music played commencing a celebration in Oracle Arena, the Warriors did not celebrate for too long.

The team and interim coach Luke Walton acknowledge that the history record is no small feat, but they looking more towards repeating as champions rather than setting new records. They also know that a loss is imminent as coach Walton told ESPN, “Eventually we will lose. It’s natural to let down at some point.”

The Warriors still have room to break more records. According to ESPN, the next record the Warriors can achieve is 33 straight wins and/or 72 total season wins. The Warriors flirted with the 33 consecutive wins as they went on a 20 game win streak mid season in 2014.

In the meantime, every team that faces the defending champions is looking to take them down and be the team to break the streak, and next up is the Phoenix Suns, the Friday after Thanksgiving.
