A Day in the Life as a College Fashion Week Model

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MMM chapter.

Over the summer, I came across applications to model for Her Campus’s annual College Fashion Week and jumped at the opportunity to walk #TheRealRunway in the latest fall trends. I immediately posted an entry in hopes of getting the attention of @hercampus and @primark. Although I thought my chances were good, I almost didn’t believe it when during the first week of classes, I got an email with the subject line: “Congrats! You’re a CFW NY Model!” Over the next month, I looked forward to finding out what my looks were going to be, meeting the other models, and getting to spend an empowerment-filled day with Her Campus National!

On the day of, models were invited to a pre-runway brunch with the editors of Her Campus where we got to know one another over sips, as one delicious dish after another was brought to the table. We sat together in a beautiful garden-themed private room complete with fresh blooms, celebratory balloons, skincare gift bags, and plenty of polaroid film for our disposal.

After a lovely Saturday morning brunch, we hopped into cars to head to the venue together, full of anticipation for the fun that was still yet to come. Arriving with plenty of time to spare, all of the models got a sneak peek of the event space as finishing touches were put in place and the hair and makeup team began to file in. Once the glam squad was ready, each of us took turns getting our hair done in a sleek, simple style to compliment our soon-to-be revealed looks. By rehearsal time, everyone looked fresh-faced with glowing, rosy cheeks and neutral lips.

With each of our two outfits labeled by name and neatly arranged on clothing racks backstage, the models were free to explore the CFW floor in time for the doors to open. After checking out all of the sponsors’ activities, we returned arms full with beauty goodies and feeling inspired by all the fashion-forward looks and positivity in the room. While getting dressed in our first looks, everyone felt confident and couldn’t wait to strut in their hand picked Primark ensembles that we had tried on the day before.

Lined up in show order, we got quick makeup touch-ups and made sure every hair was in place as the lights dimmed and up-beat pop music filled the air. After spending all day together waiting for this moment, all the models let loose while awaiting their turn to hit the runway, dancing to the beat and enjoying themselves before stepping into the spotlight and posing for the camera. Going into the finale, the neutral tones and glamorous styles of our second looks brought a more sophisticated tone to the end of the show.

From pancakes, to sparkly hair clips, to making new friends, my day as a College Fashion Week model was what dreams are made of. In addition to being one of the lucky few to have the ultimate model experience, I got to spend the night with my roomie and bff, and having my fellow chapter members cheer me on was a plus! Not to mention, I went home with both of my outfits, accessories and all. Thanks, Her Campus, for such a special day!
