When I first moved here, I was overwhelmed by the size of New York City and the opportunities available to me, so I used the Marymount campus as my home base. It was comforting to have a special place where I recognized every face I saw and knew my way around. Unfortunately, the confining walls of our school quickly became frustrating and restrictive when I wanted to find a peaceful place to study. All of the places on this list are perfect for quiet moments to finish that final paper or read that chapter of your favorite book without breaking your piggy bank.
Bryant Park
Located on 42nd St, Bryant Park is my favorite place in New York. It has green chairs and tables that never seemed to be filled and one of the fanciest public bathrooms. A giant grass lawn is at the center for your sunbathing and napping needs. Every few feet is equipped with outlets so that your laptop will never die, and the entire park has free wifi.
When you need a study break, stop by Wafels and Dinges for a delicious snack or play a board game with a new friend at the Game Corner.
Coffee Shops
Local coffee shops are a great way to be in a cool, relaxing environment while still enjoying a delicious snack. Coffee shops are located on every other street. You just need time to explore the one that’s perfect for you. My favorites are Gregory’s Coffee, Cafe Grumpy, Juan Valdez Cafe, and The Bean. But of course, you can always savor a grande frappuccino from Starbucks.
Whole Foods Market
Whole Foods is known as the upscale grocery store with all natural products. But did you know that every Whole Foods has a dining area and juice bar? These seating areas have free wifi and a public bathroom. The large tables are perfect for laptops and excessive amounts of notebooks. Also if you get hungry, walk over to the market and choose from various to-go meals before you return to your work.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Met is the largest art museum in the United States, but they also have exhibits perfect for studying in. As a student of NYC, all admissions are donation so you can literally visit for $1. Though the entire museum is great to explore, the first floor’s Temple of Dendur is my favorite spot. This Egyptian temple is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook Central Park and an ample amount of seating perfect for setting up your study session.
The Mid Manhattan Library
The Mid Manhattan Library is located on the same grounds as Bryant Park. This one-of-a-kind library feels like walking into a museum. With free wifi, public bathrooms, multiple rooms to work, and a small cafe on the first floor, you will never want to leave. Not to mention the artwork! From the marble-covered lobby to the ceiling murals, your eyes will have a hard time staying glued to your work.
