In this climate, we need something to distract us from all the messed up things that’s happening in our lives and around us. Creating, viewing, and being around art is a way for people to escape, share opinions, use their voices, and to understand what we are feeling and what is going on in our society.

Why does art need to matter now? From the natural disasters to people being stripped from their homes and taken from their family, our nation is becoming more and more divided everyday. Social media has made it so easy for people to share their opinions and bicker, become more divided by simply sharing hateful words. Not to say that art doesn’t start controversy, but exposing people to things they need to think about, things that give them a warm feeling they can’t explain reminds them why we live the lives we do. For a lot of people, including myself, it is easier to create rather than speak. To express what is better said without words. To process what they are going through and share it, so that maybe someone else can understand or feel effected.

Art is communication. Art is resolution. Art is expressing and exploring. Art is culture. Most importantly as individuals, it is our job to break down the walls society is trying to build around us.
