5 Hidden Gems In New York City

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MMM chapter.

So, you live in New York City (aka – one of the most exciting and amazing cities in the world!) While living in “the city that never sleeps” isn’t exactly what you would call a bargain money-wise, you don’t have to cause serious damage to your bank account to explore these hidden gems in the city. Take a break from your latest Netflix binge marathon and experience some of the amazing things New York has to offer without breaking the bank!

1) Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda FountainLocated a couple blocks off of the Carroll Street stop on the F train this truly old-fashioned soda shop is has the look and feel of an old time musical. Their sandwiches and sundaes are delicious-they even have egg creams but what really is incredible is their ice cream. It’s homemade and I’ll go on record and say that their vanilla ice cream is one of the best that I’ve ever had-seriously pair it with a Rickey Lime soda for a float it’s amazing! To make it even sweeter you can usually get out of there with only having spent around ten dollars!

2) Corner BookstoreMaybe it’s just me but I always find bookstores to be some of the cutest and coziest places especially in a city like New York. Corner is right by Central Park and easily reminds me of Belle’s bookstore from “Beauty and the Beast” or like a version of Meg Ryan’s children’s bookstore in “You Got Mail.” While it’s definitely not the cheapest place it’s worth a visit to just browse through their selection on your way to the Met or the park.

3) Greenacre Park WaterfallHidden right on 51st street between 2nd and 3rd avenue is a waterfall nestled in Greenacre Park. It’s one of those blink and you’ll miss it places. It’s calm, relaxing and a perfect nook to escape the craziness that is New York every now and then.

4) Mark’sJust a couple of blocks from the Astor street train stop lies Mark’s-a delicious little burger joint. The sliders are tasty bites served on a silver tray and so are the fries. If the large painted cow outside that identifies its location doesn’t intrigue you enough it’ll definitely be the milkshakes or that you can get lunch for only $10 your pick!

5) Hudson River ParkSituated right on the water, Hudson River Park is extremely calming and relaxing on a nice spring or summer afternoon! It’s walking distance to a Shake Shack, movie theater and Barnes and Noble with places to bike sit by the Pier. Oh, there’s also beach volleyball courts and a mini golf course –where you can golf 18 holes for the just $5!
