Hurricane Irma to hit Florida

After blasting the northern Caribbean, Hurricane Irma heads towards the United States this weekend. The category 4 hurricane is expected to hit Cuba and the central Bahamas Friday, then make a line for the Florida Keys Saturday. Sunday, it will hit Florida’s southern peninsula and begin to move up the state.

Australia to vote on same-sex marriage

Beginning Sept. 12, ballot papers asking whether the law should be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry will be mailed across Australia. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced the national vote August 8 after Australia’s High Court ruled the vote could go ahead.

North Korea fires missile over Japan

North Korea flew a ballistic missile directly over Japan, which landed harmlessly in the sea after traveling around 1,700 miles Tuesday, September 5. The missile flew over the northern island of Hokkaido and prompted the government in Tokyo to warn residents to take cover. 

Trump moves to end DACA

President Trump ordered an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program Tuesday September 5. The Obama-era program allows certain illegal immigrants who entered the country as minors to defer deportation for two years which is subject to renewal and grants them eligibility for a work permit.
