Romy Mars, Lily-Rose Depp, Gracie Abrams and Maya Hawke are all names hot in the media, but why is that? All these celebrities have had huge viral moments on the internet, whether that be for a TV show, movie or music. But the reason for their fame boils down to one similarity: their celebrity parents.
The term nepotism baby — or nepo baby — is often used to describe these individuals. Growing up in the spotlight, they have lots of eyes on them, and these eyes often mean more opportunities. Nepo babies have long been criticized for “not deserving their fame” or “being handed jobs,” but a recent trend in the media shows people yearning for this easy and idealistic lifestyle.
The ‘nepo baby’ life
The internet is obsessed with aesthetics. That is, “old money fashion,” or “quiet luxury” and the effortless lives of nepo babies are certainly no exception. Growing up rich with everything you could ever want within arm’s reach — who wouldn’t want it? Fans are drawn to this perfectly simplistic lifestyle of fame, riches and privilege. However, this life isn’t free of criticism.
Do nepo babies really deserve their fame?
Whether or not nepo babies truly deserve their positions is really a subjective opinion. While it’s clear that they have a huge advantage in “making it,” some of these celebrities have proven their genuine talent. I, for one, can say that watching the Netflix original show “Stranger Things” with nepo baby Maya Hawke playing the character of Robin, was life-changing. Hawke’s emotional acting and her character’s compelling storyline brought the show to new depths, improving upon the already viral sensation it was.
Now, of course, the same isn’t true of all nepo babies. Some have struggled to make a reputation of their own, while others have used their connections to build impressive careers.
Privilege and opportunity
Daughter of director J.J. Abrams and producer Katie McGrath, Gracie Abrams has made quite a splash in the music scene. From opening for Taylor Swift to headlining her own tour, she’s stayed busy entertaining her growing fanbase. While her family name gave her an undeniable head start in the industry, her songs have kept listeners interested. Still, it makes you wonder, would she still have this success were it not for her family status? Many aspiring musicians struggle to get their name out there at all, and Abrams blew up on the internet in just a few years.
The Bigger Picture
While nepo babies may not always deserve the fame they’re handed, it’s not always fair to disregard their talents either. Our societal fascination with their lives reveals more about us than them. It highlights our growing desire for ease and success without obstacles. When everything comes so easily in life, are you really succeeding when you reach your accomplishments?
