NYFW: The Minimal Makeup Trend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Whether it be celebrities or every day women, makeup has been a lifesaver on a daily basis. From walking the streets to strutting down the runway, it has made a huge difference, elongating eyelashes, adding color to eyebrows and lips, and giving skin a healthy glow.

However, in the last few months, the “I Woke Up Like This” style has been trending. That being said, Marc Jacobs decided to make it a “thing” this year at New York Fashion Week. Considering fashion and models revolve around looking beautiful and put together, this was a bold move on his part when all of Jacobs’ models sported not even a smidge of makeup this year while walking down the runway.

Minimal makeup has been everywhere in NYFW, but Jacobs took it to a new level. Jason Wu, BCBG and many other designers kept makeup to a minimum this year, showing the models’ true underlying beauty.

Many designers have come to the conclusion that there are no rules in fashion anymore. From mixing and matching completely opposite patterns to wearing no makeup on a fashion runway at one of the most prestigious fashion events in the world, rules no longer apply. Whether it’s a model for Marc Jacobs or an everyday woman, less appears to be more

To say that no makeup became a “thing” in the New York Fashion Week 2014 is probably an understatement. Will this trend stick in the fashion world for years to come? In my opinion, models are beautiful enough as is; Marc Jacobs’ decision for the models to go barefaced was a tiny twist that made a significant statement in the fashion world.
