A guide to helping you cure any reading slump and help you fall in love with reading again.
A couple months ago, I began reading a book that I was so excited to read and finally see why this book was so popular on my TikTok.
I started the first chapter but as I was reading the words, they began to seem muddled and my desire to read was gone. These are all the classic signs and symptoms of the dreaded diagnosis of a reading slump.
For me, reading has always been a way to escape the harsh realities of life but when that outlet becomes taxing, it seems to be the end of the world. Knowing how to cure any reading slump is vital for all us readers to keep in mind, especially when a case of the dreaded reading slump comes into our lives when we least expect it.
Reread a Comfort Book
At times, starting a new book can feel a bit daunting. I’ve discovered that going back to a cherished book from my collection is the perfect cure for a reading slump. Revisiting a favorite that reignited my passion for reading is one of the best ways I’ve found to get back into the reading rhythm. It’s like rediscovering an old friend who always brings comfort and inspiration.
I know rereading books isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and it isn’t the same as reading it for the first time but I feel that immersing yourself in a story you already know you loved can easily make you excited to read more books.
I used to avoid rereading books because I thought it seemed pointless to revisit storylines I already knew. I was also afraid that a second read would make me see the story differently. Fortunately, this wasn’t the case and rereading some of my favorite books has helped me find my love of reading again.
So, if you find yourself in a reading slump that has dragged on, revisit a comfort book you have not read in a while and find familiarity in reading a book you already know you loved.
Five Books, Five Chapters
Another method I have used to get rid of a reading slump is picking out five books and reading the first chapter of each.
I know this may sound taxing and unmotivating when you already don’t want to read one chapter let alone five, but this can really help jump start your desire to read.
At first, I thought this method wasn’t one I would ever find success in fighting my reading slump but it helped me start the Throne of Glass series by simply reading the first chapter. I picked out five books I have been wanting to read and by the fourth first chapter,I was hooked on a book.
This method is great for getting you reading a new book and finding a new storyline to fall in love with. Five chapters can feel like a lot, especially when you are already in a reading slump but it will help you find a brand new book if rereading isn’t your thing.
Book Recommendations
One way I have found to help me get out of a reading slump is to phone a friend for help.
Reader friends and even online readers on BookTok are some great resources for great books that will help cure any reading slump. A book that is popular with your friends and online is popular for a reason so taking their advice can help you find a book you will love.
Since starting my reading journey, I’ve found people around me with the same love of reading as I do. Having a community of book readers around me to help push me and guide me through my reading journey has helped me through numerous reading slumps. I know not everyone has a reader friend community but even finding a community online can work wonders for your reading journey.

A Final Reminder
Reading is meant to be a place to escape when life seems too tough to handle but sometimes life can get in the way and even reading can be taxing at times.
No matter how many books you read in a month or even a year, don’t let that influence how you think of yourself as a reader. If you read five books in one year or if you read seventy, you are still a reader.
A reading slump may seem to be the end of the world and can make you dislike something you normally need to help relieve stress but don’t let a dreaded reading slump lose your reading spark.
Knowing how to regain your love of reading and even admitting when you need to take a break from reading is something all readers struggle with.
Find your method to help cure your reading slump and find a reading community that will help you share your love of reading with others.
