I Hate Warm Weather, and Here’s Why

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Spring is officially here, and the weather is certainly reflecting the change of season. While most people are celebrating the higher temperatures and sunny forecast, I am dreading it. For full disclosure, I’m from Wisconsin and love the cold. But the main reason why I hate warm weather is because I love black.

I’m a minimalist when it comes to my personal style; I stick to mainly neutral tones with some olive green and burgundy sprinkled in. My favorite shirts are black, my favorite jeans are black, my favorite booties are black and all of my leather jackets are black. I’m not depressed, I’m not angry, and I’m definitely not goth. Black just makes me feel powerful and sexy. It gives off that “don’t mess with me” vibe, which I’m pretty much always going for. Not to mention, it hides stains easily and literally goes with everything.

If you’re obsessed with black like I am, then you most likely love cold weather. Honestly, I thrive in winter. The fashion is much better IMO, and the frigid temps create opportunities to add layers and create different outfits using the same pieces. I don’t go crazy with accessories, but I do love a good blanket scarf.

So when I saw the temperatures slowly climbing into the 60s and 70s, I died a little inside. I knew that soon I would no longer be able to wear my beloved black turtlenecks and over-the-knee boots. I begrudgingly unpacked my shorts and frowned at them with disdain. “The end is near,” I thought to myself.

Now, it’s not that I don’t like being outside. I love a good hike or hammocking session, really. I just hate that I can’t wear what I love. Usually, black makes me feel strong and confident, but in the spring and summer, it makes me feel… sweaty. Anyone who’s worn black in the sun knows that it is an instant heat magnet. I literally feel like I’m baking in an oven. So, because I’m not a masochist, I switch to lighter and brighter fabrics. But in doing so, I lose a part of who I am. I don’t feel the same without my leather jackets and dark ripped jeans.

I’m trying to be less pessimistic about the warmer weather. In fact, I can actually say I’m super excited about my upcoming trip to a warm and tropical location. I’ve also found ways to adapt my style to the hotter climate, like wearing black suede chokers and checkered tops. Though I will never love summer as much as I love winter, I am slowly accepting that I can still look stylish in warm weather.

People love to say that “[blank] is the new black,” but let’s be real, nothing will ever trump the original. Black is chic, classy, timeless and, best of all, flattering. While I can appreciate clean summer whites, I’ll be counting down the days until the cold arrives once again.
