How To: Get That Summer Job!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Winter Break has come to an end – which leaves us with nagging mothers and fathers asking us what our plans are for the summer. These aren’t plans about what friends we’re going to visit or that road trip we have planned… No, they’re talking about a j-o-b.

Don’t freak out collegiettes, now is the perfect time to begin the search! Here are a couple steps you can take to make your job-hunt a little less stressful:

1.     Start early- start now! We have plenty of time before school ends but it’s important to remember that a lot of students are in the same “I need a job” situation as you. Start by doing some research. A lot of companies Tweet if they’re hiring. In fact, betcheslovethis.com recently tweeted that they are currently looking for interns!

2.     Look for a job that could lead to a future internship OR one that will give you experience related to your major. Experience is a must because potential employers will want to know if you’re familiar with your potential job! If fashion is your calling, look into retail. If you want to be a teacher, look into tutoring.

3.     Make connections. Now is a good time to stop by the places where you have applied and strike up a conversation. The squeaky wheel gets the oil! If you make a habit of stopping in and asking questions, your future employer will remember this!

4.     When you do get the interview, make sure to dress appropriately and show up earlier than you’re expected. You don’t want your future employer to have to wait for you.

5.     Lastly, don’t forget to follow-up your interview with a phone call or thank you note of some kind. By doing this you let your future employer know you’re hands-on and interested in the job.

Following these simple tips will help you de-stress and get started on your job hunt!  Good luck, collegiettes!
