HCM’s Guide to Lovely Lipstick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Lipstick is classy. The taxi scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s has always impacted me. Audrey Hepburn applies her lipstick in the back of a cab, using her compact mirror, looking simply divine.

We are in college. We are young. We can take risks. So why not take risks with your makeup? Lipstick is an easy way to change your look. It is simple, elegant, and easy to carry in a purse or backpack.

However, lipstick can be tricky and expensive. Her Campus is giving you, the new lipstick lady, a guide to easing into your new lipstick-wearing life.

Lip Balms:

Lip balms tend to be lighter, sheerer and more moisturizing than actual lipstick.

If you’re looking for a bold color, my personal favorite is Pink Punch by Maybelline Baby Lips. It’s bright, but is versatile with many outfits.

Lip Stains:

Lips stains last for many hours and are good for layering with gloss, but can easily dry out lips.

Fans of Emma Stone can be suckered in to Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain. It lasts for a while, with some added moisture. It also looks similar to the Clinique Chubby Stick, but at about half the cost.

Long Wear:

Many lipsticks promise to last all day, but who actually believes that? While they won’t last nearly half of the time promised, applying every few hours will suffice.

Maybelline’s SuperStay 14HR Lipstick doesn’t last 14 hours. It does, however, last through your morning classes (even after some much-needed coffee).

Currently, I have a slight obsession with what I think of as a bombshell pink, à la Bridgette Bardot. If I could pull off the blonde hair to match, I would. That being said, my favorite SuperStay color is Perpetual Peony.

When experimenting with lip colors, the key idea is to “experiment”. Do your research by looking up some colors online. Check out these Pinterest sites for more inspiration. Go to a makeup store, check out a few colors, buy a few and wear them. Odds are, you’ll look great.
