Now that first rounds are over, the homework load is really starting to set in and everyone’s immune system seems to be taking a toll. We know you’re busy and don’t have time to be sick or lie in bed all day! Her Campus Mizzou has a few quick tips to help all you collegiettes™ avoid getting sick.
Keep calm. Being stressed out naturally weakens your immune system because energy that is normally spent on your immune system is being used up faster from being anxious.
Get a good night’s sleep. You may think an all-nighter will earn you an A on that exam, but sleeping is actually better for you. If you can’t get a full night’s sleep, try using this sleep calculator. It tells you the best time you should hit the hay in order to feel the least exhausted the next morning.
Consume plenty of vitamin C. This boosts your immunity! Eat some clementines, oranges or strawberries.
Get a flu shot. It might seem scary, but it’s worth it in the long run. Would you rather feel a quick pinch or spend a few nights curled over the toilet? It’s easy at Mizzou – you can get a flu shot at the Student Health Center.
Keep a mini hand sanitizer in your purse. We’re going building to building and class to class, so there are many germs that can be spread around. Use your Purell regularly, especially before eating.
Don’t share drinks. When you go out on the weekends to the bars or tailgate, have your own drink. You never know who is fighting a cold, or worse mono.
Stay hydrated and exercise. Working out and sweating, as well as drinking a lot of water, will help flush germs out of your system and give you a boost of energy.
