The Cupcake Craze Hits Columbia!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Prepare yourself for an instant sugar rush when you sink your teeth into a delicious cupcake from The Velvet Cupcake. Sure to satisfy even the most intense sugar cravings, these cupcakes make the indulgence. You can forget about your resolutions to eat healthier as you step inside downtown Columbia’s hottest new cupcake and wedding cake shop, which opened this past December next to The Tiger Hotel. In all seriousness, though, these blissful desserts are worth the extra calories!

Trying to choose one cupcake is like trying to pick your favorite sister. You just can’t do it! We at Her Campus Mizzou suggest going to The Velvet Cupcake with a group of friends and splitting as many different flavored cupcakes as you can afford.

Red velvet
remains a fairly constant flavor at The Velvet Cupcake, but the shop rotates among a variety of other flavors, such as tiramisu, triple chocolate ganache, and wedding cake. They also have sugar-free options, including carrot and strawberry.

The cupcake that immediately caught my eye was the peanut butter cup. Both peanut butter and chocolate frosting are swirled into a heaping pile atop this chocolate cupcake, and let me tell you, this beauty tastes as good as it looks.

Based on the recommendation of the woman behind the counter, I also tried cookies and cream. This one is perfect for days when you have an especially strong sweet tooth. The delicious frosting tasted like the inside of an Oreo, and with bits of the cookies mixed in, it complemented the chocolate cake nicely.

The PB&J cupcake will certainly hit the spot, just as the sandwich did when mom packed it in your lunchbox in second grade. This elementary-lunch-turned-mouthwatering-dessert perfectly captures the essence of everyone’s favorite brown-bag special. The white cake was paired with rich peanut butter frosting and was accented with just the right amount of grape jelly in the top of the cake.

Compared to similar bakeries in larger cities, you definitely get a big bang for your buck at The Velvet Cupcake. At $2.25 a pop, the price can’t be beat. Located next to the Tiger Hotel at 23 S. Eighth St., The Velvet Cupcake is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Whether you’re a hardcore chocoholic or just looking to try a fun new treat, The Velvet Cupcake totally takes the cake.
