Angel’d Up: Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2012 Preview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

It’s one of the most talked about shows of the season. The celebrated and magical event that takes place at the end of every year causes girls nationwide to gather together to join in sorrowful sighs and ‘why don’t I look like that?” comments. Through the haze of jealousy however, one fact remains: the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is coming soon, and we here at Her Campus sure are prepared for it. We’ve come to terms with the fact that this show is best if watched in appreciation of the outfits, not out of spite for the perfect legs and effortlessly beautiful features. So here’s a little sneak peak for the readers, showcasing the good, the bad, and the scandalous that will air Dec. 4 on CBS.

The Good

Constance Jablonski –

Constance’s icy blue eyes worked in her favor to reflect the bright-blue hue of her feathered wings. She also looked cute and simple in a yellow chiffon number for the Angels in Bloom segment. The outfits weren’t over the top and definitely played to her features, making her one of my personal favorites of the show.

Candice Swanepoel –

This is the year for Candice Swanepoel. Good thing, because it makes up for 2011’s her less-than-stellar outfits and the 40-pound wings that were pulled from the show. With three gorgeous outfits, it seems as if the designer custom-made each outfit for the South African beauty. From the lilac floral wings to the adorable Valentine’s Day theme in the ‘Calendar Girls’ segment, this angel once again reigns supreme.

Alessandra Ambrosio –

With a $2.5 million bra in the line-up, it’s no wonder Alessandra showed up like a true queen. Only a couple months (months!) after giving birth to her second child, Noah, Alessandra stepped out in style in an amazing set of floral wings and a beautiful crystal-encrusted corset in the ‘Circus’ segment.

The Bad

Toni Garrn –

We understand that every circus needs a clown, but attaching balloons to a girl and a gaudy polka-dot outfit is not an attractive way to embrace clowns. All she really needed was a clown nose and she’d be ready to head to the circus tents in her six-inch heels.

Liu Wen –

I wasn’t aware that a painted lady could be portrayed as a circus act, but Victoria’s Secret seemed to know how to incorporate one. Although it’s an interesting concept, the look took away from the lingerie being displayed and was almost frightening. On top of that, add on a headpiece and some feathers and you’ve got an over-the-top display that’s more scary than sexy

Ieva Laguna –

It seems that Victoria’s Secret was keeping with an animal theme this year, featuring a tiger and poodle in the Circus segment, and a … sock money in PINK? Though it’s known as the segment for the youth, PINK went too far this year in the ensembles, one of these being an interesting sock money outfit on beauty Ieva. If you give a gorgeous girl some rainbow ears and a tail, you’re definitely doing something wrong.

The Bonus

Karlie Kloss  –

This is an outfit you’ll never see live on the CBS broadcast or otherwise. While St. Louis native Karlie Kloss did walk the runway in this outfit for the Calendar Girls segment, enough buzz was generated about it being offensive to Native Americans that Victoria’s Secret put out a public apology and refused to show it on the air in December. While I understand the controversy, I actually like the outfit, and it will be hard to explain where exactly November went amidst all the other calendar girls.

Overall, the show put out some amazing outfits amongst the over-the-top designs, and I can easily say I’m not the only one excited to see everything in motion when the Angels hit the runway Dec. 4. Until then, check out some more outfits from the show in this slideshow and get working on those abs … or a great slice of pumpkin pie.
