5 Holiday Movie Dating Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

What’s the holiday season without your favorite winter classics? Holiday movies seem to be everywhere the second Halloween’s over, but what you might not have considered is that your favorite flicks may offer valuable dating advice!

1.    Elf: The unusual dates are the best

Admit it: dinner and a movie gets real old real fast. Maybe your date has a quirky idea in mind, but don’t knock it until you try it! Buddy takes Jovie on an eccentric tour of New York City, including a stop at “the world’s best coffee” spot and ice-skating in Rockefeller Center. Unusual dates make the best memories, and if not, at least you’ll have a funny story.

2.    The Holiday: Try something new

Maybe you’re in a rut and dating the same type of guy over and over, or maybe you keep looking in the same places. Amanda and Iris step completely out of their comfort zones for the holidays and end up finding love. If they’d stayed in their hometowns, they wouldn’t have found their whirlwind romances, so follow their leads and put yourself out there! Take a random class you’ve never considered before or find a new hangout. The change of scenery will be a welcome adjustment.

3.    Bridget Jones’s Diary: Don’t let your pride cloud your judgment

So maybe it isn’t technically a holiday movie, but a lot of the film’s major events take place on Christmas. Bridget lets one awkward encounter ruin her chances with Mark Darcy, and she ends up with a total jerk as a result. Your pride shouldn’t get in the way of finding love, so give that cutie you may have dismissed too quickly a chance. You never know; he may just be your Mr. Darcy.

4.    Christmas Vacation: Get through holiday stress with the one you love

To say the Griswolds had a hectic holiday is a massive understatement. Their December was filled with disaster after disaster, and yet Mr. and Mrs. Griswold stuck through it. How? They stayed together. The holidays can be stressful for anyone, but don’t let that stress take a toll on your relationship. Your boyfriend can be great for the occasional vent session. If you’re single, a funny holiday mishap story can make for a great conversation starter.

5.    Love Actually

Where do we even start with this one? This romantic classic has loads of tips for finding love during the holidays, so we picked a few to highlight.

First, don’t be afraid to tell someone how you feel. Mark is secretly in love with his best friend’s new wife, Juliet and eventually tells her (in an incredibly cute and original way! Boys, take notes). While it ultimately didn’t work out (and we’re not suggesting you turn into a home wrecker), you have to admire Mark’s bravery. Your crush will never go anywhere unless you act on it!

Next we have Jamie and Aurélia. The language and cultural barrier between these two almost ruins their relationship, so don’t let this happen to you! Love isn’t without its hurdles and rough patches; you just have to work through them. If it’s meant to be, it’s worth all the hard work.

Then we have David, the prime minister, who falls in love with Natalie, a member of his staff. Relationships with co-workers can be tricky, so be careful if you decide to pursue one. The two also have to deal with other people’s opinions, which threaten to tear them apart. We’re not saying to completely ignore any warnings from those who have your best interests at heart, but keep in mind that it is ultimately your relationship.

And of course, your holiday cutie is the perfect person to enjoy these holiday flicks with you! Happy holidays, collegiettes!
