5 Do’s and Dont’s to Long Distance Relationships

We know long distance relationships can be hard. Follow these five rules to make sure that relationship lasts!

1. Do make guidelines. Don’t make rules.

Just like the “Pirate’s Code” from Pirates of the Caribbean, you want to set guidelines instead of rules. No one likes to be told what to do. Making guidelines like “We can dance with male/female friends when we go out, but won’t discuss it with each other after the party is over,” is a nice way of keeping things fun and casual without being overbearing.

2. Do be supportive. Don’t be an obstacle.

Though college schedules are full of hustle and bustle, this work prepares us for a better future. Save yourself from petty fights about missed calls by being understanding of your significant other’s busy schedule – even if this means cutting your quality time short.

3. Do be flexible. Don’t get caught up in structure.

High school days are over. Timmy doesn’t need to call every night at 10 to let you know he loves you. Getting caught up in a cookie-cutter routine may not be realistic for your relationship. Relax. Take it day by day. Go with the flow!

4. Do have your special things. Don’t let the spark fizzle.

Long-distance relationships take work! Do special things for each other. Try sending weekly letters or sharing funny YouTube videos. Making these efforts, whether small or large, can lead to huge differences!

5. Do remember why you chose to do this in the first place. Don’t give up!

When times get tough, try recalling why you originally fell for your significant other. Arguments will come and go, but keep your focus on what really matters – love!
