Perfect! You’re all moved in to your new place. The furniture is set up perfectly, the bed is made and the desk is all set for a good semester of hard work. If only the place wasn’t so… bare. Let’s face it. Dorm rooms are one step away from prison cells, and while apartments are nice, they often lack décor. Most of us don’t have a multitude of framed artwork and portraits. That’s expected of college students. But what we do have is creativity. Here are five creative and attention-grabbing DIY art projects to fill your walls.
1. Melted crayon art
Melted Crayon art is a cheap and easy way to fill a wall with unique art. Because the way each crayon melts is different, each piece of art is unique. All you need is a canvas, a box of crayons, some hot glue, and a blow dryer, and this fun art project is on its way to your wall. Add your own creative flair to this project by adding words or pictures. You can also use different color schemes and canvas, such as blue and purple on white and red, orange and yellow on white, etc.
2. Chevron wall art
We can all agree that chevrons are cool. They are minimalistic, yet stimulating. This project is super easy, and with a little measuring, you have a stunning chevron piece that looks perfect above your bed. If you’re extra creative, you can add a monogram or your sorority letters.
3. Inspirational word painting
This project is super easy, and you can get pretty creative with different color combinations. Simply paint a canvas with your favorite color combos, spell out your favorite quotes with vinyl lettering, paint over the colors with a top coat of black, and then peel off the letters. You get a nice, colorful quote without the mess of stencils! Add a unique touch by switching up the colors and patterns of the first coat of colors, and by using different base colors for the second coat.
4. Photo strings
Photos are always a great way to remember fun events from the summer or old friends from back home, but frames are expensive and tape can ruin the photos. This can easily be averted by stringing hemp or twine along a wall with clothespins, then pinning your favorite photos to the wall. This is a cheap and easy alternative to getting individual frames, and a safer way for hanging your memories. For added creativity, you can add glitter, sequins or other effects of your choosing to the clothespins.
5. String pegboard art
This projects requires a little more hardware, but the result is definitely worth it. This project uses nails and yarn of your choice to create a raised word or shape. The result is a long lasting memento of your college years, whether it be your favorite word, a cool symbol or just an image you like. Using painted or unpainted wood, different colored nails, and multiple colors of yarn can introduce your own creative feel to this project.
Well there you have it! Five super easy DIY projects with enough room to add your own creative flair. Now when you come home after a long day of classes and mindless studying, you can come home to color-filled walls of your own design and creation. Happy crafting!
