Best Places to Get Drunchies in Dinkytown

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Minnesota chapter.

For those that don’t know, “drunchies” are when you have the drunk munchies. In other words, when you drink your stomach seems to trick you into thinking you haven’t eaten in days, and all good judgement about healthy eating seems to go out the window. Shouldn’t eat fast food? Out the window. Shouldn’t eat past 8 p.m.? Out the window. I think as college students some of us have just accepted our fate and turned to embracing the fact that we might eat an entire pizza at 2 a.m., or yeah, I might eat the burrito the size of my face before I fall asleep. Dinkytown doesn’t help the situation either; with numerous fast food restaurants open until 3 a.m. on the weekends, and most of them being in the same two-block vicinity, it looks like we’ll just have to keep eating! Here are the top “drunchies” places around Dinky, according to college students who get very drunk and very hungry:

Mesa

Let’s be real, it’s probably the first place you thought of when you read the word “drunchies.” Mesa has been a favorite since it opened in Dinky in 2006. Serving over 50 different kinds of pizza daily, Mesa is sure to make your mouth water at the end of your crazy night. Walk past Mesa around 2 a.m. and you’ll see a line out the door, rain or shine! Just don’t piss off the security guards, because they aren’t afraid to kick out anyone being too…“rambunctious.”

Insomnia Cookies

Conveniently located around the corner from Mesa, Insomnia is the drunk sweet tooth’s heaven. What’s even better than going out to eat after a long night of partying? Having it delivered! If you’re craving something chocolatey, warm and gooey, Insomnia Cookies is the place to go. If you’re a week-round partier, you’re in luck. This sweet spot is open until 3 a.m. all seven days of the week!

Five Guys & McDonald’s

Both of these burger spots are open until the wee hours of the morning on the weekends. Some might crave the cookies, but others crave the salty, greasy tastiness that is a classic burger. The two restaurants are just a few doors away from each other, so competition is probably pretty tight. Alcohol or no alcohol, I think customers are still loyal to their burger place of choice. Sorry McDonald’s, but Five Guys has those Cajun fries that are so good, not to mention peanuts for those weird late night cravings. But, McDonald’s is the go-to for a quick milkshake.

Qdoba & Burrito Loco

If you’re craving burritos, tacos, etc., Qdoba and Burrito Loco are both open till 3 a.m. on the weekends. Though Qdoba might be cheaper, it’s more fast food-y than Burrito Loco. Burrito Loco has the leg up with the upstairs bar. Finished drinking for the night and don’t want to move? You can order food to the upstairs, or go down and custom make it Chipotle-style. Not to mention Burrito Loco is a favorite for the Fish Bowl drink. Before and after drinking a literal fish bowl full of UV Blue (and God knows what else), you should probably be sure to eat something!

Toppers

Technically it’s in Stadium Village, except for the only thing you have to move to get it to Dinky is a finger. That’s right, you don’t even have to call to order because it can be done with a few clicks on the computer! Can it get any better?! Topper Stix are a must in addition to crazy options for toppings. Don’t like pizza? They’ve got wings! Perhaps a little more pricey than Domino’s, but the quality is better and hey, your financial decisions are really AWOL after a night of drinking anyway, what’s a few more dollars?

Partying is a big part of a lot of college students’ lives, and in the end, what’s a few more hundred calories when you’ve got pure, greasy happiness at the end of a night out?
