Hi, there! International Women’s Day was on March 8th, so in honor of that, I wanted to depict what the world would look like if sexism didn’t exist. Below are three short stories about women who live in that ideal world.
Eliza is eight years old. She loves gymnastics, playing football with her older siblings, and hopes to be a chef one day. Her parents know that Eliza’s future career plans will probably change one hundred times by the time she graduates high school, but they will support her no matter what she chooses to do. Eliza feels happy with her school atmosphere, her family, and herself.
Julia just finished her day at the office and is currently walking through the parking garage to get to her car. The area is not well-lit and no one else is with her, but she is not frightened or intimidated by her surroundings. She does not walk quickly, she does not hold tightly to her purse, she carries no mace, and her keys are stored in a pocket in her purse, rather than in her hands, a weapon ready to be used at a moment’s notice. Julia makes it safely to her car and drives home. Just another day at the office.
Claire is retiring next month after a long and successful career. Five years ago, after climbing the ladder within her company, another corporation sought her out to become their new Chief Financial Officer. She happily accepted, having known that the CEO of her company would not be leaving the position anytime soon. She was hired for her intellect, strong leadership skills, and her ability to anticipate other businesses’ strategies. While she loves her job, Claire is looking forward to the next stage of her life.
A look into the lives of Eliza, Julia, and Claire gives an illustration of what I think life’s events might look like from the perspectives of women in a world where sexism does not exist. Doesn’t that sound like a great world to live in? To find out more about how to end sexism and boost women’s empowerment, check out the website International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day is on March 8th every year and is a great reminder to us all about the great strides that have been made and will continue to be made towards equality for women. This affects all of us, so join the cause!
