As a teenager in high school I was always involved in some kind of organization, so it is not surprising when looking back at high school I always remember being part of a group. Whether it was going to track and field practice or hanging out at the mall with my close-knit friends, I was always involved. For me, going to college with no one I knew and not belonging to any kind of group was a little bit daunting. Having been used to seeing my friends everyday and always belonging to a group, I was discouraged my first week of school.
Luckily, after my first week I came out of my shell a little bit and decided to join an intramural volleyball team with some of my newfound friends from my hall. Going into my second semester, I still felt like I needed something and my lack of involvement on campus was starting to get to me. One day while on campus, I ran into two girls. We got to talking and I was surprised at how kind and open they were to someone they had just meet! They had mentioned to me that they were in a sorority and invited me out to see what Sigma Phi Delta was all about— I’m happy to say I can now call them my sisters.

When I finally had the chance to meet the sisters of Sig Phi Del, I was pleasantly surprised at how well I fit in. The sorority is not the biggest by any means but the girls were all so nice. It’s weird, but at that moment I knew that this was exactly where I belonged.
I love that since we are so small I have a close relationship with all of my sisters. Since Sig Phi Del is a local sorority, I was also surprised at how little it cost because being local allows for lower dues. It also allows us to build our sorority for the needs of our members, which I love!

Through joining Sig Phi Del I found out what true friendship and sisterhood are all about. While joining, my family called me and said that my grandmother was sick and in the hospital with what they thought at the time was cancer. For me, being a freshman, I really was not quite sure who to turn to and had no idea what to do. I decided to talk to one of the sisters about it and instantly everyone was there for me. I could not believe it, I was not even a sister yet but they were all there for me offering support and even rides to the hospital. It was then that I realized my love for Sig Phi Del and the amazing girls in it. Now I look at the amazing girls in my sorority and they truly are my family.
Before joining my sorority, I was just your typical intimidated, shy freshman looking for friends and a place to belong. I was trying to discover who I was and now I have all that I wanted to find and more. I’m no longer the shy person I was in high school. I am a different person who has learned new skills, ideas, the importance of giving back and the meaning of sisterhood; I owe this all to my decision to join a sorority. I know that I will continue to grow and figure out exactly who I am under the guidance and support of my sisters. For me, I finally found out where I belong and I am a proud sister of Sigma Phi Delta.
