My experience coming to Millersville University was not one of the typical college student, but it was an experience that is typical to a good chunk of MU students: I was a transfer.  As a transfer student, I knew I had a long road ahead of me in terms of finding my “place” among students who had already formed their circles of friends after a full year of getting to know each other.  I knew joining an organization was a great way to meet people easily, and I knew that Greek life was a great place to start looking.  What’s better than finding a place among a pre-made group of friends, right?  Well, joining Greek life is a whole lot more than just finding friends.  It’s finding family in a new home away from home.

Currently, I am the president of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Epsilon Kappa chapter at Millersville.  For me, the experience of finding my perfect place in MU’s Greek life was easy.  Like finding the perfect wedding dress, I just knew that ASA was the right fit for me from the moment I met the sisters at an open recruitment event called Meet the Greeks.  The ASAs were the last group of women I met that night, and from that moment on, I knew it was an organization I wanted to be a part of.  The rest of the recruitment events just reassured me that I had made the right choice: everyone was so welcoming and relaxed, and I instantly felt at home.  Millersville had become a less scary place because of those women.

Through my experience and journey as a sister of Alpha Sigma Alpha, I learned so much more about myself and I’ve grown so much as a woman and member of society.  ASA has offered me a place to develop my leadership skills, to find new friends, and has challenged me to do my best even in the face of the worst situations.  Each and every woman who I met in my journey through Alpha Sigma Alpha has had a significant impact on my life.  I doubt there is any other organization on this campus that would give me the experience that Greek life and ASA has given me.

Being a member of Greek life at Millersville offers students the opportunity to contribute to the community through service, to develop professional skills that are essential after college, and to find a group of people who share similar values, ideals, and views on life.  Being a member of a national Greek organization gives students the opportunity to make connections with other Greeks all over the country.  There are few other organizations that offer the security of having someone to turn to for support no matter where you’re located in the United States.

Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined myself as a college senior and president of a sorority.  Greek life at Millersville has given me that opportunity and I would not trade it for the world.  Even if ASA does not become your “place” in MU’s Greek life, there are plenty of other great organizations to try on.  Give it a chance and go Greek!
