The Truth About Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

Relationships are hard, no one has perfected them. Especially in college, sometimes it seems like there is no such thing as a good relationship. This past year I’ve been working on my personal growth and that means relationships as well. Here are two relationship tips that I’ve learned over the past year that will make dating a little easier:

It’s not personal – Don’t make it personal

Sometimes relationships don’t work out, simple as that. Not because anyone betrayed anyone or cheated, but because the time isn’t right, distance is too far, people change, etc. Of course, no one wants to hear that their significant would like to end things; however, them ending things is not a personal attack on you. This can be a hard one to learn, it’s easy to get defensive and take others’ actions personal. You have to remember that at the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you and so do others.

Labels don’t make a relationship

We are caught in a culture where everything and everyone needs a label; however when you think about it, why do we need labels? It might feel like you need a label to have a monogamous relationship, but many do it every day. It takes work, just like anything, but it’s possible. It takes a lot of trust and communication, just like a normal relationship. Labels don’t mean you love someone more, it doesn’t validate a relationship, it doesn’t mean anything. Love is love.
