TIME WILL PASS, BUT MUSIC ALWAYS STAYS

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

Time will pass, but music always stays.

I find it interesting, really, how everything is always changing. Yet somehow I can listen to a song at age five and then again at twenty, and in those lyrics find that same little girl. She seems foreign most days, but not then, not ever in music. It doesn’t stop there, either; anything or anyone can be felt in music. If a memory was a sound it would be the lyrics to my most cherished song. I’m almost 21 and I’ve realized I haven’t spent much time really thinking about me. Who I was, who I am, and who I’ll be. It’s kind of scary to think about, and maybe that’s why it’s avoided… or maybe I’m just too busy. Either way, I’ve tried to spend most of this year just thinking about me.

You’re probably wondering why I even brought up music to begin with, but my entire life music has been present. It’s been there through breakups, accomplishments, failures, and pure love. Through music I can truly understand myself. So, I thought I’d share the songs that have changed my life, some recent; some old; and maybe you’ll learn something about yourself through them too.

1. GROWING/DYING- THE BACKSEAT LOVERS

The backseat lovers are a pretty recent discovery of mine, and I am absolutely obsessed with them. Indie rock is one of those genres that shouldn’t sound like it’s right, but it absolutely tricks our ears, and it ends up being a masterpiece. “Growing/Dying” has gotten me through this semester of college. If you ever find yourself feeling lost and questioning your entire path, then this is the song for you.

2. BAD THINGS- MILKY CHANCE FT. IZZY BIZU

This song was on repeat for the entirety of 2018. I remember coming home from school and just blasting this in my room to make myself feel better after a long day. I also discovered this around the time my ex and I broke up, so upbeat music was definitely my go-to. This song is a great reminder that there will be good days, new love, and fresh starts. Milky Chance is still one of my favorite bands.

3. DIFFERENT AGE- CURRENT JOYS

I’m going to let this song speak for itself but check out their other songs because Current Joys is such a great band.

4. FIGURES- JESSIE REYEZ

The anthem for those who just got out of a toxic relationship. It really puts into perspective the conflicting feelings one has for their abusive ex. The pain in the singer’s voice really puts the cherry on top.

5. CLOSE YOUR EYES- THE BACKSEAT LOVERS

Of course I need to mention another wonderful song from The Backseat Lovers. Early-adulthood is a confusing time. Having to quickly learn how to be independent while also trying to figure out who you are is not easy. This song touches base on parental relationships and how they can influence our views of ourselves. With all of these struggles taking place, anxiety finds a home in your head, and it’s hard to escape something that’s apart of you. I think this song highlights these feelings well.

I could list a million more songs, and maybe I’ll share some more in the future, but these songs are ones that I will think about for the rest of my life. I hope you can take something away from the lyrics as well.
