Hocus Pocus, I’m Brokus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

It’s that time of year again where it is socially “appropriate” to watch Hocus Pocus 24/7! This year, while watching my all-time favorite Halloween movie, I couldn’t help but relate to a lot of what the Sanderson Sisters feel or say. I’ve always found it interesting how, when I watch old Disney movies, I can tell I’m growing up. I can tell I’m growing up while watching Disney movies because I have began relating to the villans of the movies instead of the teenage princesses.

I don’t really remember ever being a morning person but if I am being completely honest with myself, when I started college I began hating mornings even more. The only way I can actually survive mornings before the clock strikes double digits is coffee. Coffee makes everything better – even awful mornings when you just want to go back to sleep.

And when you can’t get coffee you find yourself walking around campus all day like a zombie. Or, you go home and flop on your bed like Billy and take a long nap. When I first started here at Millersville University I began nocturnal (I’m not anymore, thank goodness). I’m not sure if it was just because I was not used to everything that comes with college or what. But anyway, I would sleep all day (waking only for classes and food) and then I would be awake all night to do homework. I’m sure I’m not the only collegiate that struggled with sleeping when they first started out.

How it feels when it’s supposed to be Fall weather and so the air conditioning is turned off in the classrooms. Need I say more? I think not.

How you feel when you successfully make your first home cooked meal in your apartment. Like my sleeping routines, my cooking skills are rough. No joke, I once caught a hamburger on fire (in a skillet)! Luckily I have been getting better at cooking but it’s definitely something that is not my strong suit.

Do you ever have that conflicted feeling when you see high school students touring around campus? The conflicted feeling comes from wanting to encourage people to further their education but also wanting to save them from the enormous stress and workload that comes with college. College is definitely something a person needs to think deeply about before deciding to go or not. When these high school students come for tours I also feel like I’m an animal at a zoo and they’ve come to see us in our natural habitats? It feels weird to be stared at – especially if you’ve got sweatpants on and your hair in a messy bun.

When you go out with your squad and discover new things. I love going on adventures with my best friends because I know, no matter what we do, we will always have a blast! If you haven’t found your squad yet have no fear, you’ll find them!

Public transportation in a nutshell. Have you ever went to get on the bus and immediately felt slight panic over how crowded it was? Yeah, I definitely do not miss having to use the bus! Tip: As soon as you are allowed to have your car on campus, do it! Paying for the parking pass is definitely worth not having to deal with the bus or trolley!

I hate when people tell me to calm down – especially when it comes to all the assignments that are due. When I have too many projects and essays due in one week I tend to get pretty sensitive and a little snappy. When I get too stressed out due to school work I chunk the assignments by focusing only on the assignments that are due first. If you find yourself stressed maybe this management skill will work for you too.

That feeling you get when your professor throws a pop quiz as soon as you walk into the classroom. Pop quizzes are horrifying to me. I could have studied hardcore the night before but as soon as a professor says the words “pop quiz” everything automatically disappears from my brain (I’m happy if I can remember the date).

I hope you were able to relate to these as much as I was able to! Also, if you haven’t watched Hocus Pocus yet this Halloween year, you need to fix that ASAP!
