I hate when people say that the best things in life are free – they’re not. Before college I agreed with this saying, but college has taught me many things. One thing I became quite good at is detecting lies.
People argue that love is the best thing in life (especially since it’s free), but if I had to choose between love or Netflix, Netflix would win in a heartbeat. Netflix always has my back when I’m stressed, angry or even trying to procrastinate. Who needs a lover when you can lay in bed and watch hours upon hours of TV shows or movies?
As a college student, I personally believe that coffee is another amazing thing in life. Whoever came up with the idea of coffee should be marked down in the books as a saint. Their invention saved many grades and has helped thousands of students cram last minute information into their already aching brains. Unfortunately, coffee is not free – an iced misto at Starbucks is almost $3!
The third best thing in life would have to be a dog. Dogs are loving, supportive and therapeutic. The loyalty of a dog is stronger than any other loyalty I have ever come across. You can tell a dog your deepest darkest secrets and know that they won’t judge you. One of the best things about a dog is that, to get them excited, all you need to do is raise the pitch of your voice and suddenly they are ready to party.
Education is another amazing thing in life. I love expanding my “mind palace” – if I didn’t I wouldn’t be putting myself through the stress of college. Everything about college is expensive: housing, tuition, supplies and food. On top of all the usual expenses for college, you also have to count for therapy and anti-stress/depression medications. Even when you finally graduate and have a degree, the expenses are not over.
When I get older my perception of this quote may change. Someday I might agree with it but for now I’m going to turn Netflix on (while doing homework in the background), drink a large cup of coffee and cuddle my puppy.
