Humidity Proof Makeup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami chapter.

Going to school in Miami certainly comes with its perks: beautiful beaches, bustling nightlife and warm and sunny weather year round. Unfortunately, from the summer months into early fall, Miami is a sauna. Who needs the gym when you look like you’ve already done all your cardio just from walking from class to class? Gross, yes, but it’s the reality for Miami students.

What’s a girl to do when humidity turns you into an oil slick and most makeup products slide off your face within a few hours? There’s nothing worse than putting on makeup just to sweat it all off. Luckily, we’ve got a few tips and tricks for those ultra-humid day or for a night out dancing.

Opt for a waterproof mascara
The combination of heat and humidity often leads to runny or smudged mascara, which isn’t a good look for anyone. Waterproof mascaras will ensure your lashes look great throughout the day. As a bonus, waterproof formulations hold a curl much better than its non-waterproof counterparts.

Ditch the pencil eyeliner altogether
Liquid or gel eyeliners are your best bet to make sure your eyeliner won’t crease, smudge or flake off. Liquid and gel eyeliner formulations don’t budge once they’re set and are pigmented more intensely than pencil eyeliners.

Use a combination of brow gel and powder
Eyebrows frame your face, so unless you were born with Cara DeLevingne eyebrows, it never hurts to fill them in. Try applying brow gel or pomade, which are longer-lasting than pencil, and set your brows with an eyebrow powder in a similar shade.

Invest in a primer
Though it’s true that your skin feels better when it’s not covered in a ton of product, primer is your best friend in Miami. It may seem counter-intuitive, but primer will increase your foundation or BB cream’s staying power and provide an even base to your skin so that any product layered over it will glide on smoothly. Similarly, eyeshadow primer helps your eyeshadow (and eyeliner!) last longer and look more pigmented. It also prevents creasing, which happens when your eyeshadow or eyeliner settles into your eyelid crease.

Swipe on a lip liner underneath any lip product
Lip liner ensures that any product you apply on top of it will stay much longer. Try a universal clear liner that you can pair with any lip shade.

Layer a cream blush
In this weather, the only thing that lasts on our cheeks is redness from the heat. If your blush fades super quickly, layer a cream blush under a powder blush to ensure longevity.

Swap out your foundation
A thick layer of foundation feels heavy and unpleasant on your skin in humid weather. Instead, swap out your foundation for a BB cream or tinted moisturizer. Dab concealer onto any problem areas for extra coverage.

Consider oil-blotting products
Blotting powder will absorb any excess oil you have on your face. Blotting sheets tuck perfectly into your bag and help take the shine away without disturbing your makeup.
