Why Mother Always Knew Best

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

Ever thought back on all of the crazy things your mom used to say to you when you were little? Now you realize how relevant it was back then and still is. For some reason, mom’s advice will always solve your problem. Let’s take a walk down memory lane…

  • “Be a lady.”

Translation: There is a difference between knowing what manners are and using them. We are always looking to be using them.

  • “Sharing is caring.”

Translation:
No one likes a person that keeps everything to herself. Let people borrow your crayons or whatever they need. When the time comes that you need something, it will be nice to have someone willing to do you a favor.

  • “Eat your vegetables. They will make you big and strong.” or “You are what you eat.”

Translation: We all know you aren’t going to turn into a brownie or Popeye, nor do we want you to. However, a balanced diet can do wonders for your mood, sleep schedule, and body. Not to mention it gets boring eating the same food over and over again. Spice it up.

  • “If you watch too much TV you’ll turn into one!”

Translation: Live your life! Go out and smell the roses, run, jump, play. Just don’t sit and waste your life on the computer or TV. If you do that, don’t be surprised when life passes you by and you are left wondering where it went.

  • “Don’t be a fruit loop.”

Translation: There is a fine line between being “unique” and just plain weird. We’re looking to be the former.

  • “You are always prettier than you think, smarter than you think, and stronger than you think.”

Translation: No matter what is going on in your life or what other people think of you, you are amazing. You can take on the world! Now go out there and act like the beautiful, smart, and strong woman that you are.

  • “Everyone wants to do something fantastic with their life or be something fantastic when they grow up. What they don’t realize is that each day is fantastic.”

Translation: Most things in life are a privilege not a right. In fact, life itself is a privilege. So instead of wanting more out of life or dreaming of how much better your life could be…think of all of the blessings you are granted each day and enjoy them.

So I guess it is true that “mother always does know best,” and she always did. Sometimes we just need a little more time to realize it. (Photosource)
