One of my favorite parts about a New Year is looking to see what was happening in the world 10 years ago. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on your life and the world and see how it’s evolved over 10 years. In 2008, I was turning 10, which is basically the biggest deal in the ENTIRE world. Here’s an overview of what life was like back in 2008. If you wanna feel even older, check out What was big in 2007 by yours truly to see what’s turning 11 years old in 2018.

POLITICS

Obviously, one of the biggest deals in the world was the Presidential election.  In 2008 Barack Obama was elected as President, making him the first African American to become president of the United States. SNL was dominating the scene with their political parodies even back then-I mean Tina Fey as Sarah Palin is one of the most classic SNL skits to date. So basically nothing’s changed.

MOVIES

In 2008, everybody was Kung-Fu fighting as Kung Fu Panda was released. 2008 was also the beginning of the Marvel Super Hero era as both the original Iron Man and Hulk movies came out. Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried had everyone singing along to Mamma Mia (side note: Mamma Mia 2 is coming out in 2018!). By far the biggest movie of the year though goes to Pixar’s WALL-E.

MUSIC

Some serious anthems came out in 2008 that everyone still knows the words to today. Single Ladies by Beyonce is one of the most iconic hits, with the amazing music video that came along with it. Everyone was hearing about Katy Perry as she hit the spotlight with the hit Hot N Cold. Britney Spears made a comeback with her albums “Circus,” that included the hit track Womanizer.

VAMPIRES WERE ALL THE RAGE

In 2008, Vampires transformed from the white-faced cape-wearing draculas to sexy mysterious characters that sparkled in the sunlight. The first movie of twilight released in 2008, and Stephanie Meyer’s wrote the final book of that series, Breaking Dawn, that same year. Suddenly Team Edward or Team Jacob took over the internet and became the heart throbs of teenagers across America. In addition to Twilight, the first episode of HBO’s True Blood aired in 2008 as well, a more adult version of a vampire love story, making Vampires the most common Halloween costume that year (probably).
