Accessories play a big role in the production of creating an outfit, and nails, sometimes the forgotten garnish, can play a significant part. They can either make a statement or support a fashion idea.

In the summer, the shelves of nail polish are splashed with bright colors of hot pink and nautical blue, mixed with the occasional sea foam green and regal lavender. It’s as if the sun has risen even in the stores. Eventually the sun will set, and then comes the Fall season with its always swanky and dark shades, as if the cast of the Broadway hit Wicked fabulously painted the shelves themselves.

Her Campus took a look at this Fall’s most popular trends, and they are as rich as the chocolate pie your aunt makes for Thanksgiving!

1. 3D Effects
Rhinestones, gold studs, and glitter are all 3D effects that can make your nails stand out (literally).

2. Black
Like the little black dress, it’s always there in the back of your closet. It’s worn when you want to feel your best without trying too hard, and a good LBD can really make you stand out. Black nails are the complete opposite color of our natural nail, which can really make a statement.

3. Black Decorated Nails
Nails painted with black designs like leopard, lace or checkered print can be a quirky way to lighten up the black. Mixing it with other colors is a great way to ease into the fierce world of black.

4. Metallic
A little bit of metallic goes a long way. It’s a great way to get your shine on without looking like Mr. T. Gold. Silver and bronze can also act as great neutrals with any outfit.

5. Oxblood
Just when you thought choosing the right shade of red nail polish for your dainty digits was difficult, try finding the right shade of oxblood. That’s right, I said oxblood, the darkest shade of red you can find before it looks black. Don’t let the name scare you away though, it’s a great choice for the red nail lovers without looking like you’re on your way to a Christmas party.

Remember, when trying out dark colors, using a basecoat can prevent staining on your nails. Covered in a glossy topcoat is the easiest way to make it last, but a matte coat can add an edge. Showing off your accessorized nails is as easy as adding a chunky ring and glittering bracelet. So get out there, crunch through the fallen leaves, sip your pumpkin spice latte, and watch as others admire your dazzling fall fingers!
