The Pros & Cons of Going Facebook Official

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

As soon as we become romantically involved with someone, we naturally want to shout it from the rooftops and let the whole world know how great the other person is. However, some of us are unsure whether broadcasting our relationship on Facebook is necessary, so HC discovered some pros and cons on whether to make your status Facebook Official (FBO).

Pro: It’s for realIf he wants to be Facebook official, you know he’s into you. Though this might sound silly, if it’s announced to the world, it’s legit. There’s no more beating around the bush about being in a relationship. You are, and now everyone and their brother will know about it. No gray areas here … unless “it’s complicated”.

Con: Save the dramaNo one wants to broadcast their latest breakup, but it’s hard to avoid when everyone can see your status pop up on their newsfeed. Though we may be eager to show off our newfound love, it may not work out. Do you really want your third cousin, old friends from high school and your parents’ friends to see that he broke up with you or vice versa? Probably not. Sometimes it’s just better to keep your love life private until things are serious.

Pro: Let’s people know what’s going onYou won’t have to go through awkward conversations about your relationship status if everyone already knows. Also, it lets people know you’re off limits and so is your SO. Some girl sees your guy in class, thinks he’s cute, looks him up on Facebook, sees he’s in a relationship and BAM, she’s over it. No harm, no foul.

Con: It’s an awkward topicHow do you go about asking whether going FBO is necessary? Some may find this to be extremely trivial and unnecessary, while others feel it as a declaration of love. It depends upon how you both feel about Facebook and whether privacy is a better choice.
