Millennial Mia: 10 Ways to Destress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

In most of our everyday lives, we can be stressed by school, drama, friends, family situations, money and all the other things that need to be done.  But let’s take a step back from those worries for a moment. Let’s say that we all had an infinite amount of time with no stress or busy agendas. Just space for yourself to reflect, think, and relax.  What would you do then?

In some ways, we need to take a step back to evaluate those needs from life requirements.  It’s an essential way of life to have a balance to get work done while making time for yourself to wind down.  It can be anything from lighting your favorite candle to getting yourself a quick cup of coffee. From my experiences, I learned that in order to be the best version of yourself, you need to be able to have at least some time reserved for yourself even if it’s for 20 minutes.  It makes a huge difference if you take that step for yourself in order to be the best you.

Here are some of the ways that I like to relax!

1. Light a candle: This is one of the things that I do frequently whenever I come home to wind down.  It’s soothing and I love smelling the scents! I recommend any Nestle Candle because it’s long-lasting and each of their scents smell amazing!

2. Change into comfy clothes:  My typical go-to is some nice sweatpants or a pair of cute pj’s!

3. Take a nice, warm shower and put on your favorite face mask: This is one of my favorite things to do because it’s very rejuvenating to do for yourself and it never gets old!  I recommend the Neutrogena face masks and the ones from Sephora!

4. Read a good book: Right now, I’m very into self-motivating books and stories about how people are successful and/or have a positive mindset.  Having a good book that makes you happy is a fun way to wind down!

5. Watching a movie or favorite TV show: Netflix and Hulu are my saviors whenever I’ve had a stressful week. I just make my favorite snack and enjoy some TV!

6. Do a fun project: I’ve started some sewing projects and crafts that are fun! I also recommend coloring because it’s surprisingly soothing and wakes up your inner child!

7. Create a journal entry: This can be anything related to your day, what you’re grateful for, and the goals that you want to achieve!

8. Listen to music: Spotify has some really chill music playlists and I’ve created some of my own!

9. Take a nap: I loooooveee taking naps! It helps with your REM cycle and makes you more energetic like a natural cup of coffee!

10. Turn off your phone: This plays a lot into stress for me. Usually, after a certain time of day, I don’t pay attention to my phone and wait till tomorrow morning to answer. Totally worth it.  Instagram also has a feature that has a timer of how long you want to be on Instagram and it saves me time from scrolling endlessly on their page!
