Michelle Tanner: Fashion Killer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

The 90s are back in a big way; chokers, platforms, athleisure, and grunge looks are being seen all over the place lately. However, I was barely alive during the 90s. So for me, dressing like I did in the 90s means dressing like a little girl. And you betcha bottom dollar I have been!

Here are some trends that are super in right now that are throwing it back to the playground.

Frilly Socks

Socks that peek out above your favorite pair of sneakers are a great way to make a boyish outfit seem a little more feminine. Here you can see Michelle Tanner ~werking~ it with her white ruffled socks in the show Full House.

You can get the same look as Michelle for cheap at Forever 21. They are selling these ruffle lace socks for only $3.90.

Baby Tees

You know the ones. The shirts that are just barely cropped and have a shorter sleeve. They almost look like they are a little too small, but man, are they great. I love wearing baby tees with high-waisted jeans and shorts because they are the perfect length where I don’t show stomach, but my shirt isn’t weirdly long.

This blue shirt from Brandy Melville reminds me so much of how I used to dress when I was younger. A simple t-shirt, some cutoffs and a pair of sneaks and I was ready for the day! This laid back style has come full circle. I am now in college and am always looking for the most comfortable clothes to wear to class.

Overalls

At the time, I hated wearing overalls. Back then I had little say in what I wore to school, so if my mom said I was wearing overalls, by golly, I was wearing overalls.

As time has passed, they have come back onto the fashion scene and I can now say that I think they are a cute and casual way to wear denim.

Here’s my fashion icon, Michelle Tanner, again rocking a pair of denim overalls with floral appliqués. Although I can’t say I would wear this exact pair, floral embroidery has been a popular trend lately as well.

You can also wear all your baby tees with overalls for an even more youthful vibe.

Sneakers

If you know me, you know I’m living for this sneaker craze that’s been happening lately. They are my favorite type of shoe and I wear them constantly. I guess old habits die hard because I was just as much of a sneaker-head as a little girl as I am now. I wore my white converse everyday to school. They allowed me to play tag and hide and seek on the playground as well as being the perfect canvas for doodles when I was bored in class. Sneakers are a timeless addition to my wardrobe, and they should be for you too.

Ruffle Tees

She’s back again with the killer looks! Michelle Tanner murdered the game as a toddler, but that really comes as no surprise. I mean look at who played her – Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Ruffles are a classic childish embellishment. I know I remember them from all of my Easter and Christmas dresses. I also remember hating them and feeling silly and uncomfortable the entire time. But just like overalls, I have grown to appreciate the look of ruffles on my clothes.

I’m a big fan of adding a ruffle detail to an otherwise basic top. It adds a cool-girl look to any top. While the ruffles of today are much less doily-like, ruffles are still sending waves through the fashion world.

Scrunchies

Everyone wore scrunchies back in the day. The brighter and more colorful they were, the better.

In fact, in every picture I’ve posted of little miss Tanner, she’s been wearing a scrunchy in her hair. They were everywhere.

Recently, I’ve been seeing people wear them less in their hair and more as a bracelet, but I’m sure they will make the jump back to hair accessory soon enough.

Half-Up, Half-Down

There were as limited hair options for me back then as there are now. Up, down or a combination of the two. The best part of putting your hair half up is the youthful effect it gives off, especially if you do two little pig tails.

I mean, why do you think Ariana Grande looks so young? Her signature hair look is half-up, half-down. For an even younger looking appearance, try to create messy curls and then do half-up pigtails!

Everyone wants to look younger than they do, but I guess lately everyone wants to look like a toddler. What’s next? Will bonnets and pacifiers become a trend?
