Miami Girls Weigh In: Dating Frat Guys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

On a college campus, dating options are spread far and wide. How do you choose one guy out of thousands? Do you go for the cute, quiet Math major that lives in your dorm? What about the bad boy upperclassman that still doesn’t have a major? Or…are you brave enough to enter the world of dating a Frat Star?

There’s no doubt that an entire society comes along with choosing to date an affiliated guy. All of the sudden it’s like you have 100 other boyfriends as well. Some girls really see this as a plus. One Miami girl says, “It’s definitely nice to feel like you have a whole group of older brothers looking out for you. Not only do you have your boyfriend ready to come to your rescue, but you really have the entire chapter.”

Sophomore Tessa Walters, who dated a fraternity member last semester, says, “It was great because of all of the friends that I made. I’m definitely a “guys’ girl” so the fact that I could just go to the house and hang out with these guys like they were my old friends from high school was awesome.”

On the other hand, that kind of lifestyle is not for everyone. Transfer student Kelsey Gladieux did not have a positive opinion: “I feel like it would be too hard to balance fraternity life with “real” life. I wouldn’t want my boyfriend to feel like he has to miss out on things just because he has a girlfriend.”

Another sophomore girl says that she enjoys dating guys who are not in social Greek life. “I don’t feel like they have to constantly worry about whom they’re hanging out with, and they have the freedom to hang out with more than just the guys in their chapter,” she said.

We all know that dating a fraternity member can get messy…but how messy? An anonymous sophomore, who dated a fraternity member most of her freshman year, said, “I’ll probably never do it again. Everything was going great until I decided to participate in sorority recruitment second semester. I guess he didn’t really approve of the chapter that I joined because after I got my bid he just sort of stopped talking to me…it wasn’t even a good break up. With how so many people judge fraternities and sororities I guess he just didn’t feel like we “matched up” or that my sorority was good enough for him to be affiliated with.”

So ladies, there you have it. You’ve read first hand what some of our fellow girlfriends have been through when it comes to dating these men. So…which way will you go? Whatever you do, make sure you get a good story out of it.
