Now more than ever with the holidays quickly approaching, girls on college campuses everywhere are wondering how they are going to win over the parents of their significant other. This concern comes with great reason. It’s important that his family adores you, just as much as he does right? Possibly. And I mean, what’s not to love: you’re smart, you’re funny, and some might even call your quirkiness “cute”. But the question is how are you going to convey all of your wonderful traits to his family. Well ladies, do not fret for Her Campus is here to divulge in the simple, yet key components to impressing his family.

First and foremost, the most important thing is to not force it. While you want your guy’s parents to like you, do not, I repeat, do not overdo it. Building a lasting relationship with your boyfriend’s family takes time, and one brief interaction, dinner or even long weekend isn’t going to be enough. Think about how long it took you and your guy to get to know each other.

We could say something along the lines of, “be yourself” but we’ll refrain in fear of sounding too cliché. But, it is important to be genuine. Don’t try to be something or someone that you’re not. It’s necessary that they are meeting the real you, not the person that you think that they want you to be.

First impressions are everything, so you want to make sure that you are dressed appropriately for the occasion. If the situation calls for something a bit more casual, keep it somewhat dressy casual just to be safe. No, we’re not talking a ball gown, but be conscientious of the hemline and neckline of your outfit, and if you have to, ask yourself, WWGT (What Would Grandma Think).

At the end of the day, what your guy’s parents think of you is important, especially if he’s close with them, but what really matters is that you made a genuine effort. As long as your man knows that you really tried to bond with his loved ones, the rest will come with time. So don’t sweat it! Put on your best smile and show his family all the reasons why their boy is so smitten.
