Feminist Resolutions for the New Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

1. Say “no” more.

It isn’t selfish to turn someone down if you aren’t really interested. It isn’t selfish to spend a night by yourself. It isn’t selfish to not text back if it isn’t a productive conversation. Women can often feel pressured to please others and appear calm and approachable. Try putting yourself first.

2. Take care of your body- but for the right reasons.

If you choose to hit the gym, don’t just do it to *impress him* or *get a thigh gap. * Do it to become mentally and physically stronger, to be able to dominate the impending Hunger Games, or to become more confident with yourself.

3. Be supportive of other women.

Read more books by women, watch movies with empowered female characters, etc. In your daily life, it’s easy to see others as competition, but work on seeing them as allies instead. If you catch yourself being jealous, consider the idea that everyone has insecurities and jealous feelings end up doing more harm than good.

4. Be open to opinions different from yours.

Educating yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do in today’s world. Be wary of differing opinions, and consider where they are coming from. Even if you don’t agree, you can always learn something new.
