Everything You Need To Know About Going To The Kentucky Derby

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Miami (OH) chapter.

Looking for something fun and exciting to do this weekend? Need a little break from Oxford? Well you’re in luck. Rally up a group of your friends and plan a trip to watch the world famous Kentucky Derby on May 2 at  Churchill Downs . Here are a few helpful tips to aid you in the planning process.

HELP! How do I buy tickets?General admission tickets can be found on the Kentucky Derby website. They sell at $55 dollars online up until May 1st at 5 PM. If you have a friend hoppin’ on the bandwagon at the last second, don’t fret; tickets are sold the day of at $60.

How am I supposed to get there?A popular option in recent years has been to rent a party bus. Many have found this to be the most cost effective option being that you can split the cost among 30+ friends. The driver can drop you off AND pick you up from the derby, how easy! It’s a two and a half hour bus ride; so make sure to pack snacks.

But, what will I wear? This is the fun part, girls. Time to whip out your neglected Lilly Pulitzer collection that you have locked away in the back of your closet because you told yourself you’re “not into that anymore.” But, any dress will do! Just think bright and springy.  Hang onto your pals or you might get lost in a sea of sundresses and sun hats. Need some inspo? Check out these celebs’ past Derby looks.

Other things to know!

  • Be sure to take a look at the list of the Derby’s banned items found on the website (unfortunately this includes Selfie Sticks)

  • Vineyard Vines is known as the official style of the Kentucky Derby

  • The horse named American Pharaoh is favored to win

  • Tell your friends and family back home to look for you on NBC Sports, the official TV partner of the Kentucky Derby

Now, remember to have fun, be safe and take tons of pictures! This is an experience you’ll want to remember.
